We'd like to welcome our first two followers, Midmarsh John and G L Wilson, owner of the Hog Blog.
We enjoyed the Hog Blog so much that I was inspired to start this blog, in the hope it would give a little of the enjoyment to others that we get from the Hog Blog, and that others might appreciate what lovely little creatures hedgehogs are, and remember that they are endangered.
Midmarsh John's "Midmarsh Jottings" just has so much wonderful material on it, and the superb photos make us very jealous. It's another "must visit".
Welcome again.

I'm so pleased to see how nicely this blog is coming along. The more hog blogs and hog diaries the better, I think, plus of course nature blogs such as John's. This wonderful little creature needs all the good PR it can get. It's an endangered species right on our doorstep but unfortunately not many people seem to realise this and just take them for granted.
ReplyDeleteWe feel a little uncertain about mentioning hedgehogs to the people in the area. We discuss them with the neighbours we know well and they all seem quite pleased to know there are hedgies about, but we would be very reluctant to go knocking on doors and asking people to look out for them. One of the two gardens which backs on to ours is completely decked, so I doubt they will see any wildlife at all, but the hedgehogs are under the decking a lot. There is a gate which leads on to the alley which goes past the ATM. The gate is never used by people and was always ajar and the hedgies used to use it. We were always worried that the gate would be shut and there would be no access, so we cut the hole in the fence. The gate is now shut. We would love to ask them to open it, and they might be very pleased to do so - or they might get very upset to think they have something under the decking and try even harder to block it. We also used to get a regular stream of hedgies coming from the right of the decking, but that stopped a few weeks ago. Did something happen to the hedgies or was another access blocked? It is difficult to know just how to approach it. I think raising awareness is probably the best approach. I feel a lot of people just don't know they have hedgies - they are so secretive that you only see them by accident - and would be quite happy to help.
