Full House

We had quite a thrill this morning - a full house. All four nest boxes were occupied. The hedgehogs were in bed early - before 6:30 am. Yesterday morning it was 7 am before they were in bed. The weather has turned quite chilly - it was down to 7.5 degrees C at 1:15 am. The hedgies went deep into the straw, so that when I looked at the cameras first thing I couldn't see any sign of the occupants. It was only when they moved.

Nightshift was in 9c, as usual, 9d in 9d, we think Flatmate in 9a and... Alfie in 9b. Although Alfie has been visiting 9b regularly and spending several hours in there during the evening, it's the first time he's spent the day. We wonder if he's had a falling out with Flatmate, or if he finds 9a is a bit chilly. Strange, after he had been taking nesting material into 9a. We will see what happens tonight.

We aren't sure who is in 9a, because the two cameras in there are mounted near the ceiling, and the ceiling is high, and the hedgehogs have a layer of straw under the cameras. All we see is the odd earthquake. We have been relying on the tunnelcam to check the visitors to 9a, but I forgot to clear the hard disk of the PC doing the captures, and it ran out of space at just after 5 am. We normally have a quick scan through the videos, take any interesting clips and then delete the file, but I am falling further and further behind, so it stopped. Still, every cloud has a silver lining - while I was checking through the videos to delete, I found an unexpected clip.

We leave the recording on all day, just in case anything interesting happens. Because of this we've caught Alfie leaving the nest in the middle of the day a couple of times. This time the clip is from a couple of days ago, and it was Flatmate - but he only popped out for a few minutes, so it looks like he was spending a penny. I'm getting good(?) with Windows Movie Maker, so I've cut some of the boring bit out of the middle, as Flatmate nips round the back.

There were a couple of other interesting clips from last night. first of all, a lighthouse in the garden:

The first time we saw a cat's eyes like this we were amazed at just how bright they are. The cat is waiting for a mouse to come out from under the decking.

This is Flatmate returning for a nap:

This is yet another clip of Alfie around 9b. We just think he's so cute. The strange way this camera put the "pupils" in the eyes makes him look even cuter.

I also had a scan through the video from the front, as that hard disk is also filling up. We aren't sure who this is - it looks like 9d. It seems he's had enough mealworms for today and is looking for something else. I put some of the hedgehog food out at the front tonight.

I also made a compilation of other visits to the front - this little chap looks like Alfie.

The is a feeder to the right of the front door, with a bowl of water, and that has had a lot of use - more than the bowl in the camera for the last two nights. As you can see, there were a few short visits to the boiler room, but we don't seem to have anybody staying for the day.

Finally, this little chap got a surprise, but it didn't put him off his food for long:

  1. Another lovely set of hoggy video clips. You are indeed getting good at using Windows Movie Maker. I use it about half of the time as, once mastered, it is so easy to chop out the unwanted sections and makes more compact files than the other program I use.

Recently I have left my external recorder on its movement detection mode. The main problem is that once at the dish the hog isn't moving enough to keep the capture going as the recording stops after 10 seconds unless it detects more movement.
